What an amazing thing. After the House viciously passes a bill that would make illegal immigration a felony, and criminalize helping illegal immigrants, people take to the streets! Half a million people march in Los Angeles, and students walk out of class. Protests in Detroit, New York, and Washington. How odd that with all the […]

For everybody who thinks that global warming isn’t real, won’t affect them, or might not be so bad:
The first hurricane in the South Atlantic ever recorded, in 2004. This appears to support global warming models.

I came across a brilliant article about Chongqing in the Guardian, which does a good job of presenting the daily contradictions which is China these days. It also provides more amazing statistics:

Being an international world citizen-type guy like me does have disadvantages. On the way home from work today, I feel like talking. HIHO Shanghai is asleep, it’s early morning for her, plus I talk to her a lot anyway. Roger - no, it’s already 12:30 am in Stockholm, that’s no good. Kate - no, it’s […]

I took an online survey for planners this morning. Here’s the “Benefits and Risk” heading on the intoductory page, (along with “Time and Cost,” “Privacy and Confidentiality,” and “Rights of Research Volunteers:”)
Benefits and Risk
The potential of risk or discomfort is minimal, and is comparable to the risk of normal office work. There are no direct […]

I have read several references recently to the effect of Peak Oil (it seems like it should be capitalized these days) on air travel, notably in Salon’s Ask the Pilot column written by Patrick Smith. Smith says that a major part of the reason so many US air carriers are in trouble is high fuel […]

Good stuff in the Times on Tuesday. They claim that a new poll shows Americans are not as absolutely against increased gas taxes as is commonly believed. Unfortunately, what I took from it is that Americans are either not thinking about this stuff very hard or (and it pains me to say this) are just […]
